Lebanon goes to London

Wines of lebanon stand at the LIWSF 2011

It’s London International Wine and Spirits Fair week and this year eight Lebanese producers – Château Ka, Château Ksara, Château St Thomas, Coteaux du Liban, Domaine des Tourelles, Domaine Wardy, Ixsir and the Karam Winery – will be presenting their wines at the Wines of Lebanon stand at the ExCel exhibition center in the Docklands.

The event will be the culmination of a year-long collaboration between the Union Vinicole Du Liban and the UK-based Coco PR, one that has seen the profile of Lebanese wine raised considerably in the £12 billion (US$20 billion) British wine market.

I really hope that this will be Lebanon’s year and that our wine will finally ‘arrive’, establishing itself as more than just an ethnic curiosity.

In the last few days, I have been drinking a fair amount of new world and French wines and I have to say that, rather than being happy to take a break from the relatively more full-bodied Lebanese wines I drink on a regular basis back home, I have found myself missing the complexity and flavors they can deliver.

The UK wine market is swamped with well-made new world blends but I suspect that British palates are craving something new and that Lebanese wine can fill that niche. Si here’s hoping for a successful event, one from which the idea of Lebanon can take further root in the consciousness of the British consumer.

Helping achieve this will be Tim Atkin MW and myself. On Tuesday we will be giving a master-class at the LIWSF. I will be giving an overview of the industry, while Tim will be giving tutored tasting of one wine from each of the wineries presenting in London. Tim came out to Lebanon in November of last year and declared it to be “one of the wine world’s best kept secrets”. By my calculation, it’s one the Lebanese have been keeping for over 7,000 years.

I will be tweeting from the fair so watch this space.

This is very exciting and I hope that the US market one day becomes flooded with Lebanese wines!

    Rudi said,

What a wonderful experience for lebanese wines and Lebanon to offer their excellent products in London! I can also say the wine and food of lebanon are some of the best kept secrets and worthwhile exploring! I am very pleased to say that recently Chateau St. Thomas’s qualty wine has been available in Helsinki and Finland and I am a strong supporter!
Maybe Union Vinicole Du Liban can orgaanise something similar in Finland!
